How to Create Window Light

My good friend Chad McClarnon always says the same thing when you ask him his lighting technique, “I want a window there, so I put one there.” What a great simple straight forward technique! Sometimes there is a bit more to it than that, but often times not. Just think about that the next time you are stumped on how to light something.

So here’s a little example of this technique at work:

Check the meta data, I shot this at 11:40PM last night. Looks like daylight right? Well, here’s the set up:

I’ll let you figure out the ratio of this set up, but that’s it. The main key to the window light, is low and big. In this case I added distance to have the light spill grow vs. having a huge softbox, but you could do that too. Remember, bareheads can be your friend if you use them with a gentle hand.
