Now this is just my opinion, but here a list of five things you have to know how to do in order to run a successful photo shoppe.
- Learn how to iron, first off, it’s a hot metal plate and some woven cotton – it’s not rocket science, but beyond that not everyone can afford a $600/day wardrobe stylist – you’ll be doing it yourself, you might too want to learn how to reattach a button, these things happen.
- Learn how to paint, not like Picaso, like Home DePot – that white wall really needs painted at least once a month
- Learn how to bite your tongue, people say things that are less than intelligent more often than not, find the grace and poise to keep your mouth shut.
- Learn how to clean the bathroom, I’m not talking toothbrush in the grout, but yes the toilet bowl needs to be clean and there need to be paper towels, before every shoot.
- Learn how to be on time, we’re not running a train line here so if you’re 10 minutes late, whatever but anymore than that you need to call somebody.
That’s all for today kids.

HOW TO WIN PHOTO COMPETITIONS | 02 Common or Uncommon?
What type of photographs impress the judges? That depends on who the judges are, what the judges do, and where they live and travel.
A few years ago I was showing two audio visual presentations. One depicted the hill towns of Italy and France; the other concentrated on outback Australia.
|
Castelnuovo. Italian hilltowns are great for Australian audiences, but may not be so interesting to Europeans. |
When I showed the presentations to Australian audiences, they loved the Italian hill towns. In comparison, when I showed the presentations to an audience in Italy, they loved the Australian outback best.
Judges are the same. Photographs of unusual or special subjects which are not generally seen generally will have more appeal than the commonplace. This is human nature.
Of course, something that is unusual for you may be common for the judge – you simply can’t know everything about the judge. And similarly, a photograph of the commonplace presented in a different or special way can astound the judge simply because it is so common!

We did a little model test for Ms. Katja Russell a few weeks ago and shame on me for not sharing earlier!! It’s just take a little bit to get to the photoshop work, after all we’re a busy shoppe! So with out further ado, here are a few of my personal favorites. (You can also find a few more of these on my flickr page too!)

Just wanted to take a few minutes to talk about what we’ve had going on over here at the studio over the last few weeks.

Well, for starters we picked up a client that is redoing their entire online brand. That’s been keeping us busy, busy, busy. 120 sku’s, 70 individual products, it’s been a lot of work. We shot both the new e-commerce and lifestyle images. They’ve never used a professional to shoot this stuff before so there has also been a large educational component. The nice thing about this project has been the opportunity to work thru some of the business of business with them. Meaning that they didn’t show up and say shoot this, we had the chance to really work hand in hand with them and shape some images that are really dynamic. We are shooting many of their products to have some serious flexibility in the future. How? We are shooting them blank and doing the imprints in photoshop. This keeps their “overhead” down and it allow us to just to do some great product shots.
