Form over Function: Photographically Speaking

Last week we shot the new catalogue cover and matching PR images for Jo-Bee’s 2010 season.

Lets talk about the form v function of this image.

  • Does this image sell more pens?
  • Does this image tell a narrative?
  • What is the commercial value of this photo?

The primary purpose of this image is to have stopping power. Now I think that these pictures are a great for an ad, they are eye catching and there is a bit of stopping power. BUT, do these photos sell more pens? I don’t know, if they stop more people, if they make a distributor pick their catalogue over someone else’s then the answer is yes.

Ask yourself, will this image increase the bottom line of my client? If not, then what is the specific business objective of the image you are about to shoot. Just something to think about when you head into your next shoot.
