Maybe “copyright” will soon mean “my right to copy”?

“Seriously, the interweb has shown that protecting copyrighted material is inevitably a war that cannot be won. Just because the web subverts traditional business models doesn’t mean it’s just gonna go away, or that’s it’s evil. We’re staring down a paradigm shift like a freight train headlight in a dark tunnel. Kinda like in Ghostbusters 2 when they are in the old train tunnel and the ghost train comes out of nowhere. About Color Space

I am always faced with that little thing called “color space”. Adobe 1998, sRGB IEC61966-2.1, ProPhoto RGB, and those are just the options coming out of Lightroom!! Alright well, as most of us know, use Adobe 1998 for print and sRGB for web right? Well, yes and no. Back in the day the photog would just drop off the film with a contact sheet marked or a sheet of sleeved chromes with their favorites marked and call it a day. Color space and reproduction was the realm of  Senior AD’s, plate burners, and pressmen. Now, that we’ve got this new digital world, I’ve found that no one really understands the what’s and where’s of the color spaces. Strengthening Your Position

So there’s this discussion going on right now on APANet about a usage agreement in a contract, although this is lengthy discussion for another time I wanted to post this little jem by Larry Gatz.

Without too much back story, he’s talking about the question of value of intellectual property; specifically value over a period of time with a written contract with a use license.

“I went to buy a car the other day…price was $15,000.

I budgeted $10,000..all I could afford.

Guess what…the car dealer said no thanks, come back with more money.

I went to Sears to buy a new washing machine…they wanted $650 for the model I wanted…and they would not accept the $500 I offered to pay. Read the rest of this entry »
